What most do not know, however, is that to exercise alone is a preference, not a necessity! Some people exercise best alone, while others need a source of support, motivation, and company. If that sounds like you, do not worry—there are great benefits to group fitness.

One benefit of group fitness is the opportunity to socialize. You may exercise at home and get a great workout, but you do not have others around for conversation. It can be lonely to sit around the house and exercise alone when you long to converse in the presence of others. If for no other reason, group exercise is an excellent choice because of its social component. It is a great way to meet people, make connections, and build lasting friendships.

Another benefit of group fitness is motivation. Your exercise routine may work well at first, but plateau after the first few weeks—and take your morale with it. At this point, you will need comfort and encouragement. Talking with group members who are “in the same boat” as you and need encouragement as well, can lift your spirits and inspire you to push through the hard days. Meanwhile encouraging your group members may be a great way for you to view your situation in a different light.

Lastly, group fitness brings accountability. Home exercise can often provide the opportunity for you to cheat on your exercise routine. Instead of finishing the last five minutes of your walk, you could stop the treadmill early to avoid the pain of completion. At a gym with an exercise group, the eye of the fitness instructor is on you every second—so you cannot “cut corners” and quit early. Accountability ensures not only the maximum benefits of a strong workout but also your exercise commitment and testimony before your group.
